5 Styles of Followership by Robert E. Kelley (1992)

Leadership and Management

Leadership and management are terms that are often considered synonymous. It is essential to understand that leadership is an essential part of effective management. As a crucial component of management, leadership behavior stresses upon building an environment in which each and every employee develops and excels. Leadership is defined as the potential to influence and drive the group efforts towards the accomplishment of goals. This influence may originate from formal sources, such as that provided by acquisition of managerial position in an organization.

(Shah, 2014)

Managers lay down structure and delegates authority and responsibility. Leaders provides direction by developing the organizational vision and communicating it to the employees and inspiring them to achieve it.

Managers focus planning, organizing, staffing, directing and controlling. Leaders focus on listening, building relationships, teamwork, inspiring, motivating and persuading the followers.

Manager gets his authority by virtue of his position in the organization. Leader gets his authority from his followers.

Managers follow the organization’s policies and procedure. Leaders follow their own instinct.

Management is more of science as the managers are exact, planned, standard, logical and more of mind. Leadership, on the other hand, is an art.

(Shah, 2014)

In an organization, leaders are a must/essential whereas managers are required.

Leadership deals with the people aspect in an organization. While management deals with the technical dimension in an organization or the job content.

Leadership sees and evaluates individuals as having potential for things that can’t be measured, i.e., it deals with future and the performance of people if their potential is fully extracted. Management measures/evaluates people by their name, past records, present performance.

Leadership is proactive, management is reactive.

Leadership is based more on verbal communication. Management is based more on written communication.

(Shah, 2014)

Distinguish between a leader and a manager. How are they the same?

How are they different?

Who do you think of as a great manager?

Is this person also a great leader?

Why or why not?

Alienated Follower:
A person in the organization who is a passive, yet independent thinker. Often effective followers who have experienced setbacks and obstacles. Capable but they focus on the shortcomings of the organization and other people. Often cynical, alienated followers are able to think independently, but they do not participate in developing solutions to the problems or deficiencies they see.
(Shah, 2014)

Passive Follower:
A person in an organization who exhibits neither critical, independent thinking nor active participation. Activity is limited to what they are told to do. Accomplish things only with lots of supervision. Leave their thinking to their leaders.

(Shah, 2014)

Conformist Follower:
A follower who participates actively in the organization but does not utilize critical thinking skills in his or her task behaviours. Participates willingly but does not consider consequences. Concerned with avoiding conflict
(Shah, 2014)

Pragmatic Follower:

A follower who has qualities of all four extremes depending on which style fits with the prevalent situation. Whatever works in his or her position and minimizes risk-25-35% of followers within any given company tend to be pragmatic survivors, avoiding risk and fostering the "status quo"
(Shah, 2014)

Effective Follower:

A critical independent thinker who actively participates in the organization. Behave the same towards everyone, regardless of their position in the organization. Don’t try to avoid risk or conflict. Have courage to initiate change and put themselves at risk or in conflict with others (even leaders) to serve the best interest of the organization. Essential for an organization to be effective. Capable of self management
